A Message From the Master

By Ian Appleton, Master

August was a quiet month as your Master with little, if any, official functions to attend. This has allowed me to organise my diary; and finalise plans for The Master’s Outing next May in Cheshire.

Installation Day was a very pleasant and memorable day, being blessed with dry weather. We were fortunate enough to be able to hold our pre-dinner drinks reception in “the sunken gardens”. A photographer was on hand to capture the moments and using this link you can download pictures free of charge: https://www.sillettphotography.co.uk/Client-Galleries/Wax-Chandlers-installation

Following Installation Day I was fortunate to be on the company cutter for a commemoration of the coronation of King Athelstan. We processed, as part of a flotilla, in front of a large crowd gathered on the banks of the Thames, at Kingston. The Duke of Edinburgh received our salute from his vantage point overlooking the river.

I would like to thank our rowers and Cox for a supreme effort in rowing 7 miles! It was exhausting, just to watch! My thanks go to PM Maile, PM Tomkins, Cox Samantha Ross, Liveryman Ed Bottomley and Tim Wotherspoon.

Following the flotilla and only a few days ago we, once more, presented candles to St Paul’s Cathedral at Sung Eucharist on Holy Cross Day. It is a fine, commemorative tradition stretching back over 650 years that we Wax Chandlers are proud to continue.

Following the presentation we took lunch at Haz Restaurant to round off proceedings. A very pleasant and convivial lunch.

I would like to encourage everyone to attend our events and share in its community and fellowship.

We have a busy programme for the final months of the year:

  • Common Hall (29th Sept)
  • Livery & Escorts Dinner (15th Oct)
  • The Master’s Curry Evening (4th Nov)
  • Lord Mayor’s Parade (8th Nov)
  • Carol Service and Dinner (4th Dec)
  • Not forgetting the National Honey Show (23rd–25th Oct)

Please book early to these very popular events to avoid disappointment.
